Two years after leaving the CBS procedural, viewers of CSI will be glad to see one of the show’s alumni characters return… and sooner than you think.
William Petersen, who played Gil Grissom during the first nine seasons, will appear for the first time in over two years in the February 3 installment.
While a show representative could not be reached at the time of this posting, I have it on good authority that the former leading man will be returning within the next week. Appropriately titled “The Two Mrs. Grissoms,” the episode finds Sara (Jorja Fox) dealing with a murder investigation at a college for the deaf where Grissom’s mother, Betty (played by Oscar winner Phyllis Frelich) and ex-girlfriend Julia Holden (Marlee Matlin) teaches. Petersen’s involvement in the episode is in the form of a few brief video-conferencing scenes.
Since his departure from CSI, Petersen has found himself participating in several theatre productions, as well as filming Tony Kaye‘s Detachment last summer. He’s currently rumored to be attached to the upcoming HBO miniseries To Appomatox.

Developing…
As of 1:55pm Friday, CBS reps. have declined to comment. Michael Ausiello over at TVLine.com has confirmed Petersen’s appearance, news that I first broke last night.
What say you, CSI fans? Does the news of Petersen’s appearance excite you, or is it too little too late? Sound off below!
